Television is one of the wonders of modern science. It is a great improvement upon radio. It was invented by J.L. Blair in 1926. In Pakistan television was first introduced in Lahore on 26th November 1964. Now we have 4 full fledge T.V. Stations in our country.

Television is a compound word. It means to see from a distance. Through television, we can see the programs from a large distance with our own eyes. Over the radio, we can only hear the voice, but on television, we can see the picture, and also hear the voice. It means that it is better to be a source of enjoyment as well as instructions and imparting education.

Let us now consider the merits of television. At first, it is a means of entertainment. We are tired of our daily work and different kinds of worries. We want some enjoyment and we can see and hear our favorite artists at home. It prevents our children to wander outside. They spend their time in the house before T.V. and thus they avoid bad society. We often meet our intelligentsia on T.V. and see and hear their discussions about the urgent problems of the country. In this way, it helps to improve our knowledge.

In the field of education, T.V. is very useful. Subjects like history and geography can be taught very well by this instrument. Science subjects can be taught by seeing the students doing experiments. It is especially very useful for adult education. Moral education can be given through films. These films will have a very healthy effect on our children. It means that T.V. is a very useful instrument to abolish social evils and educate the masses as well as provide them better kind of enjoyment.

Television also has its demerits. It is a cause of waste of time. Students and younger children pass most of their time watching T.V. In this way their study suffers.  Sometimes the children sir quite near T.V. It has a very bad effect on their eyesight. Unhealthy films showing corruption, the use of wine, illicit relations, etc. may spoil the character of the younger generation. They have a very bad effect on their minds and spoil their careers.

However, the merits of T.V. are far more than its demerits. Therefore, we can say that T.V. is a great blessing for mankind.
